Humanities is an area of the curriculum that I am really passionate about. As an avid traveller, geography has always fascinated me, and I have always been interested in the history of our country, as well as immersing myself in the history of other countries too. This passion gives me the motivation to make this aspect of the curriculum informative, interesting and exciting for students. I want to pass onto my students a vested interest in what happens in the world around them, and also teach them to be open-minded people about the world they live in.
Below is an example of a lesson sequence that I created for a Humanities unit of work for grade 5 and 6. This shows examples of my ability to use curriculum, assessment and reporting knowledge to develop a teaching sequence, and ensure it is organised in an effective way for my students.
GLOBAL EXPERIENCE PROGRAM
My teaching placement at a Primary School in Switzerland only enhance this passion for humanities. Living with a Swiss family and attending a school with Swiss students gave me the opportunity to teach them Humanities in a completely different way. I was teaching the Geography and History of Australia to students and teachers, most of whom had never been to Australia. Their fascination with all things Australia was further ignited by my presentations to them about it, and it was such a unique experience for me being able to teach them, particularly teaching as an EAL teacher. I also had a few lessons in History and Geography myself, learning so many things about their culture. It was one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life and it was such an enriching learning experience for me as a teacher.
